I was born and educated in the UK, gaining BSc (Jt Hons) in Biology and Education, plus a PGCE in Biology and General Science from the University of Keele. I started teaching in Coventry, UK in a large inner city comprehensive school in 1984, where I remained for 9 years, got married and had three children. In 1993, our family started its international journey in Geneva, Switzerland. We then moved on to Aleppo, Syria and then to Muscat, Oman. In 2000, we headed off to Jakarta, Indonesia, remaining there for 15 years, allowing our children to graduate from JIS and successfully complete the IB Diploma. I have been teaching IB Biology since
1995, I am an assistant examiner, senior moderator for Internal Assessment and IB workshop leader. In Jakarta, in addition to my teaching responsibilities, I was Head of Science and Varsity Swim Team coach. My most recent post before joining KICS in August 2017 was as Head of Science in Frankfurt. I enjoy walking, swimming and cooking.

I have been part of and involved with KICS since the very beginning when plans to build an IB school were still on the drawing board. I have been in Sudan since 1984 when the Netherlands Foreign Service posted me at its Embassy here. I met my Italian/Greek husband in Khartoum. We have 2 wonderful boys – young men now! – who grew up in Khartoum and graduated from KICS with the IB Diploma in their pockets. In fact, my older son was in the very first cohort to graduate. The first years of the KICS story were very exciting and they both look back with many fond memories to their time at KICS. I have seen it grow from a construction site to a beautiful campus with many facilities and am proud to be part of its history. I love the school and my work here. As Office Manager of the Secondary Section, I have a very busy job. There is never a dull moment for sure! Outside of school I run exercise classes, offering Yogalates and Step classes.

We consider KICS our second home since we spend the majority of our day at school. I joined the KICS family in 2008 as PA to the Principal and extremely grateful for all the opportunities it has provided.

My name is John Benson. Originally from the UK, I qualified as a teacher there over 20 years ago. I returned to post-graduate education twice to do MA's in Spanish and Latin American Studies, and Educational Leadership and Management. After an initial 5 years teaching in London, I embarked on my International Education journey. This has so far brought to places as diverse as China, Jordan, Peru and Brazil, mainly in IB and IGCSE schools. I very much look forward to continuing that journey here in Sudan, a country I visited as a tourist back in 2012. My main memory from that visit is of the incredible hospitality I received from the Sudanese people. Outside of education, I have a wide-range of interests from sports (cycling, swimming, hiking, yoga) to more sedate pastimes like reading and watching Netflix offerings from all over the world. All of this I am able to do while continuing to have the immense privilege to travel the world.

My name is Dorothy Brown and I have been on my educational journey for twenty-four years now. I received my Bachelor of Arts from Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi and then began my teaching career outside of Houston, Texas. After raising three boys, I decided to start my international teaching career. I taught in the United Arab Emirates for five years and in Kazakhstan for two years. I am delighted to further my journey in Sudan and look forward to the many new ideas my students will share with me. When I am not teaching, I love to travel with my husband, and I enjoy reading and learning about history.

Hi! My name is Sally Shafi. I am from Alexandria, Egypt, but I was born and raised in London, UK. I received my Bachelors in History from SOAS, University of London, followed by my PGCE teaching qualification from the University of Sunderland. I am currently in the final stages of completing a Masters in Education at UCL.
I have taught English and History at both British and American International schools in Saudi Arabia. I will be teaching secondary English at KICS!
I have three children, two boys and a girl. When I'm not teaching I love travelling and the great outdoors. I love swimming in the sea and the smell of fresh salty sea air. I got into hiking, last summer, after climbing a third way up Mount Kilimanjaro. My goal is to climb all the way to the top! One of the ways in which I love to unwind in the evening is playing my ukulele and doing yoga.

Greetings. I am originally from the United States, grew up outside the city of Chicago, Illinois and have lived in Colorado for the past 12 years. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science and Masters in Secondary Education. I grew up where I loved to question everything that was going around me and was always eager to learn about something new. My favorite thing about teaching is that you never stop being a student, there is always something new to learn. After teaching for 12 years in Colorado, my family (my wife Meredith, Counselor at KICS, and daughter, age 2), has decided to take the leap to teaching abroad. My personal interests include spending time with family and friends, outdoor activities, doing puzzles, and playing board games. I am honored and excited for the adventures that await me here in Sudan and look forward to working with the wonderful students, families, staff, and community at KICS.

I am looking forward to meeting all of you. I am a DP Chemistry teacher and a practitioner of the flipped classroom. Prior to teaching I was managing offices, and while I did well in that profession, I somehow found my calling in teaching. From the Philippines, we moved to Bangladesh, and now to an entirely new continent! Having worked in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries before, I found it easy to make natural soaps and cosmetic products when I found the need to switch (from commercial products) for my family's well-being. I also do sewing crafts, as well as walking/running to keep myself fit. My family and I are all thrilled to be given the opportunity to live in the wonderful country - Sudan.

My name is Reem Agil. I am originally Nubian (Sudanese) but grew up in the U.S. (Virginia). I've always been an adventurer so I pursued my higher education in the UK to broaden my horizons and be more worldly. My BA is in Business Administration and earned an Open University degree as well, continued on for an MBA with a concentration in finance, certified as a Project Manager, and now a PGCEi certified teacher. I have worked many years within the non-profit sector but then took an unforeseeable detour by filling in for a TA in the primary section. I then worked my way up to the secondary section as an intern. This year, I will embark on another new adventure - teaching IGSCE Business Studies & IB Business Management as part of the Humanities team. I'm honored to be a part of your son/daughter's academic career at KICS. On a personal note - chocolate and sports make me happy.

My name is Scott Kwiecien and I am excited to be teaching DP Economics and Humanities at KICS. Growing up in Canada, I obtained two undergrad degrees: in religious education and civil aviation. After working in non-profit organizations focused on children and teens, I then decided to change careers. This meant a return to school for a master’s in education in which then our family left Canada to start our overseas adventure. Our first place was South Korea teaching humanities as well as religious studies. Next we moved to Jakarta Indonesia, where we spent the last 7 years. This allowed my daughters to obtain their IB Diplomas and return to Canada to further their studies. During my time in Indonesia, I became an IB DP teacher of Business Management and Economics as well as becoming an examiner. At present I am pursuing a second master’s degree in IB teaching and learning. For hobbies, I enjoy golfing, anything aviation related as well as reading leadership books.

My 15 years of cumulative experience is far and wide, which includes working in the corporate world, political science think tanks, and international schools. I have taught students at both the elementary and high school levels and I love teaching. Since my experience is well-rounded, I try to provide my students with a practical approach to learning which can be associated and used in everyday life.
I am married with two kids and I love traveling. I have visited forty-five countries and lived in six of them, including Brazil, Egypt, India, Singapore, the UK, and the US. Some of the things I like about traveling are meeting new people, learning about their cultures and history, and integrating what I learn to day-to-day life.

My upbringing in France, within a multicultural family, led me later to numerous travels around the globe, where I lived unforeseen adventures, had “aha” moments (“woohoo” ones too!), and also unexpected encounters.
Ed is one of them. Ah, beloved Ed (short for Education, as I am sure you would have understood).
I suffer from the “can’t lie” syndrome, so let me be completely transparent with you:
After seeing the kind of student I was, I had vowed to never become a teacher (what an ordeal it would be!). Moreover, for me, Ed was just this old fashioned guy, very set in his ways, not ready to compromise.
But then, I fell head over heels. How on Earth?! Well, even though sometimes he can be this grumpy old man, I realised he can also be a very open minded, innovative and compassionate person who strives to create a better future. This, I loved, and I wanted in! That’s when I realised teaching would be a fantastic choice after all, and decided to do my Master’s degree in French as a Foreign Language and Education (in France), followed by a PGDE (in Scotland).
Best decision I ever made. It took me places I would have never thought of (Scotland, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil...) and allowed me to improve both personally and professionally by discovering a diverse range of curricula (British, French, American, Mexican, International Baccalaureate) and so many wonderful people (students and their families, colleagues, friends…) who helped me grow immensely.
Ed and I are very close but I would say that our relationship is balanced and healthy.
Whatever the position I hold in a school (French or English teacher, Gifted and Talented Coordinator or Head of Department) I generally manage to find time to dance, climb, learn, read, travel, discover some more. The beauty of it is, it actually enriches my relationship with him; all I learn becomes a skill I can transfer to my teaching, with my students.
And guess what! Ed and I decided to take the next step in our lives and move to Khartoum, within the KICS Community who has been so incredibly welcoming.
From what we have heard and seen, we will love it and I certainly hope you will enjoy our presence too.
Looking forward to sharing experiences with you all.

Hi there! I am from Singapore, but I have travelled enough and lived in different parts of the world to feel like a global citizen. I have over 20 years of corporate experience and have graduated from the Wharton School of Business, which has taught me that the learning process requires a crawl, walk and run approach, which in turn will make students effective leaders in their own right. I plan to share my experience and knowledge though PE and ODE (outdoor education) and build strong foundations in the students that will last them a lifetime. I have written 2 children’s picture books and I love playing Basketball. I also enjoy playing board games, traveling and taking care of my family, which leaves me little time to garden. It is always a pleasure teaching young minds and I am always excited to be with the students.

My name is William and I am from Senegal. I will be joining KICS with nearly a decade of teaching experience between Senegal and Egypt. I have previously taught English as an additional language through French, and PE in both primary and secondary schools. I believe that students learn best when they make connections between what they learn in school and what they experience in their day to day lives. When I am not teaching, I enjoy playing sports (soccer, basketball, volleyball...) listening to music and enjoying time with family and friends.

In 2007 I was lucky enough to be involved in a British Council project which included schools in South Africa and Tanzania. I knew back then, one day I would find my way back to the wonderfully diverse African continent. So excited to be joining the secondary section; providing student support and working closely with staff to maximise every learning opportunity.
I am from the north of England. My background is in inclusion and pastoral leadership, working for 20 years in secondary schools in my home town of Manchester. Inclusive education is my passion. In that regard, I am close to finishing an MA in Inclusive Education and Special Educational Needs (IESEND).
My sincere thanks to the KICS global community for making me feel so welcome, thus far. I look forward to working with you and learning more about Sudanese culture and traditions. In my spare time, I like to do yoga, swim and connect with horses, dogs, and other animals. I am particularly interested in animal welfare and conservation projects. A personal goal of mine is to learn Spanish. I am making progress, slowly!

Hello everyone! I am very excited to continue to be part of KICS in my role as counselor, offering social-emotional support in the primary section and secondary section, years 7-9. A little about me: I am originally from the United States, grew up in a very rural area of Southern Utah and then I lived for 12 years in Colorado. I have a Master’s Degree in Counseling with an emphasis in Marriage, Family, and Child Therapy and I hold a professional License in the state of Colorado as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I have been working as a professional therapist since 2012 but feel I have been a therapist my whole life. I enjoy helping people process emotions, thoughts, and experiences, honoring whatever is needed in their journey. My main approach in therapy is Solution Focused, helping clients find and create their own solutions to life’s challenges. My personal interests include spending time with my family, reading, writing, spending time in nature/outdoor activities, and playing board games. I also love musicals, cooking, meeting new people, and experiencing new things. My family (husband Scott S., secondary Science teacher, and daughter, Kingsley) and I are thrilled to be a part of KICS and continue to experience life in Sudan!
