Year 9 'rucksacked up' and headed out to the desert in search of water in the shape of Lake Jebel Awia.... The sun came out in force as we arrived at the first camp site, inbetween two high sand dunes. After a long recovery siesta, the dunes were put to good use, as students rolled and sand-surfed down before dinner time came around.
The next morning we broke camp and headed for the lake shoreline. A lovely light breeze kept the day's temperature under control and camp was reached before midday, with the reward of ice cold drinking water to welcome us in! The rest of the day was spent in various team activities, including a sand sculpture competition and rod and net fishing. Lots of tilapia fish were caught and later the students were shown how to prepare the fish for grilling using garlic and spices. The drag fishing brought in a bucket full of sardines and a couple of catfish, all of which were returned to the fresh waters of the lake.
The final morning brought a short walk out to the buses and some very happy, if somewhat dusty faces returned to school !
