Science Fair goes off with a Bang!

KICS First Annual Science Fair was held last Saturday in the gym.  Both Junior and Senior students took part in a competition to find KICS Young Scientists of the Year, together with some interesting teacher demonstrations and presentation of their Group 4 Projects by the IB Diploma students.  The event was opened by a spectacular mentoes and coke demonstration by Mr. John, with poor Moez (Y7) getting covered with coke after failing to heed the warning of “back off when you’ve pulled the trigger”!

The Seniors’ competition was very tight with a number of excellent projects being carefully judged by Dr. Ronnie Shoaul and Dr. Nahid Toubia.  The result was:

· 3rd place – Ziad, Muiez, Amir and Mina (Year 7) for their magnetic hovercraft

· 2nd place – Nada, Leen, Haya and Saria (Year 7) for their gardening project investigating mulch

· 1st place (joint) – Harrison (Year 12) for his study of evolution

· 1st place (joint) – Jamil, Basil and Moez (Year 7) for their crystallization experiment

Year 6 students presented their projects based around the theme of “What’s the Matter?” and these were judged by Mr. David Griffiths and Mrs. Safa Osman.  Again, it was a tough competition, with Shona and Anthony eventually winning the prizes.

All of the judges commented on their surprise at the level of sophistication of some of the projects and that they were extremely impressed at the commitment and enthusiasm of the students.  Well done all!
