Get Hooked on Reading, our KICS Libraries Book Awards 2010

During the last three months we have participated in three International  Book Awards.

Seniors January 2010  Costa Book Award 2009- linked with UK

This is the 3rd time KICS has taken part in this award.  Our students were under considerable time constraints but they rose to the occasion and voted. Guatanamo Boy was KICS winner, in the UK The Ask and the Answer won.

Infants  February 2010  Raold Dahl Funny Prize – linked with UK

In this event Infant teachers read each of the selected  books to their students.  These were re-read during a special assembly and the book that made everyone laugh the most won!  The results: Octopus Soctopus won at KICS In the UK Mr Puskins Best in Show came first.

Juniors March 2010  Nile Book Awards – linked with The International  School of Uganda

A landmark occasion since this was our launch of this Award.  Initiated by KICS Libraries and supported by the Director of Educational Technology Jeff Duckett, this it is an exciting venture. Students in both schools read the selected titles in their category  and voted via the Nile Book Awards Website. At KICS this took place during Book Week and on In the Spirit of Reading Day.  The results were: the overall winner, ie the book with the highest number of votes was the same in both schools.   Rick Riordon’s  “The 39 clues: The maze of bones”.

why do we take part in this kind of Award?

For fun!  To celebrate the excitement of  reading specific books and then voting along with others.  Comparing our votes with another school or country.  It all adds up to Broadening our Reading Horizons.  Developing our breadth of reading and realizing that others may chose a different Top Read but it does not matter.  Through the Nile Book Awards website we can now discuss why we like a specific book better with other participants.  This can grow into linking up with a  Reading Buddy in another country.

This Year KICS Libraries have challenged Students and Parents to Get Hooked on Reading.  Your  example helps others. Be a good role model, READ.  Next year we will be challenging you to Develop Your Reading.  Start now. Get Hooked Get Reading and show it.
