Cambridge University Archaeologist speaks to Year 9 Humanities Students

Ancient Tushhan (modern Ziyaret Tepe)

Assurnasirpal II (883-859 BC)

On Sunday 24th January the Year 9 Humanities students were treated to a wonderfully fascinating lecture by archaeologist Dr John MacGinnis from the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at Cambridge University. Dr John spoke to the students about the Assyrian Empire and his excavation project at Ziyaret Tepe, an Ancient Tushhan site on the River Tigris.

Dr John set his talk in the context of this historical period and shared with us a range of archaeological techniques and how these techniques are used to build up a knowledge and understanding of ancient kingdoms.

Meem “what caught my attention were the Assyrian artefacts and that Dr John investigates and discovers all sorts of different pieces of historical information when he is in the field”

Shihab “I learnt a lot about archaeology and the style in which a lecture is presented at university”

Daniel “I learnt about how archaeologists navigate places so that they can study an area”
