Over the last three years the U11 Boys Football Team (affectionately known as the Rhinos) has flown to Dubai in November to play in a football tournament. The tournament is an annual fixture organised by the Onionbag in Dubai and run over two days.

The boys are away for four nights altogether and, as you can imagine, this is a huge experience for them at their age. They stay in a hotel, three boys per room, and are responsible for keeping it clean and tidy before inspections by their coaches every morning.

This year the 15 selected boys trained twice weekly for six weeks prior to the trip in order to be best prepared. The first day on arrival was a relaxing, fun day spent at Wild Wadi a water park in Dubai

Day two and three were the tournament days; long days in the sun with plenty of football and teamwork. The competition is tough and the referees officiate to international rules. By the end of these days the boys don’t have any trouble getting to sleep.

The fourth day was pack-up and travel back home to the open arms of parents. For many of the boys this is their first substantial time away from home so it is about a lot more than just football. It is wonderful to see these boys grow and develop in areas such as communication, confidence, cooperation and responsibility.
